Detoxification Clinic - A hypnotic sedative: alcohol

When people drink alcohol, they feel pleasure and relaxation for the first half hour or so, often becoming talkative and extroverted. But these sensations are usually replaced by drowsiness, sedation, as the alcohol is eliminated, so that later they become silent and withdrawn. This pattern encourages people to drink more to regain and maintain the initial pleasurable effect.

In most circumstances, the chances of a fatal overdose are low. However, people get into trouble when they swallow a large amount of alcohol in a short time. Drinking on an empty stomach is particularly risky. If the person is unconscious, or can not wake up, or has trouble breathing, it is an emergency and medical attention must be obtained immediately. Some people in a drunken state vomit, and when they block the airways, they suffocate and die.

When drunks lose consciousness, their body continues to absorb the alcohol they have just ingested. The amount of alcohol in blood can reach dangerous levels, being able to die during sleep. Drinking until falling round is especially dangerous because it is when fatal overdoses occur.

Adolescents respond to alcohol intake in a very different way than adults. It seems that alcohol harms learning more in adolescents than in adults.

It is dangerous to combine alcohol with any other substance that causes drowsiness. This includes sedatives such as opiates, barbiturates, Valium-like drugs, sleeping pills, and antihistamines found in some flu medications.

All sedatives share at least some of the effects of alcohol, and each increases the effects of the others. Some substances become lethal when combined. Even small doses that do not cause loss of consciousness or breathing problems, can affect physical activities such as sports, driving a car or operating heavy machinery when they are taken at the same time.

Finally, non-narcotic analgesics such as aspirin, acetinophen and ibuprofen can have harmful side effects if mixed with alcohol. Aspirin and ibuprofen can severely irritate the stomach if taken with alcohol, and in some circumstances, the combination of large amounts of acetaminophen with alcohol can damage the liver.

The use of chemicals to alter thought and feelings is as old as humanity itself, and alcohol is probably one of the first substances that were used.

Today, alcoholic beverages are clearly the drug chosen in much of Western culture. For most people, alcohol is not too dangerous a substance. And alcohol is available to anyone who wants to take it, without the need for a prescription, since the responsibility for this decision rests with each individual.
