How to Stop Drinking Without Recourse to Alcoholics Anonymous

Many people who understand they have an alcoholism problem are not aware of alternatives to Alcoholics Anonymous. This article describes the CORE process, from the initials of the four English terms Commit (Impaired), Objectify (Rationalize), Respond (React), Enjoy (Enjoy). Using these simple techniques, you can overcome alcoholism discreetly, for free, in the dignity of your home.

Try to understand why you are drinking. Before you can use the CORE program effectively, it is essential to recognize the problem. In Alcoholics Anonymous, alcoholism is seen as a disease that you can cure only through superior power; outside of that program, however, there are other types of alcohol dependency. It may be useful to look at your problem of alcoholism in terms of survival instinct. The brain is divided into two fundamental parts, which we will call the human brain and the animal brain. The animal brain cares only for your survival, and when you suffer from alcoholism, you unjustly believe that you need alcohol to survive. If you do not pay attention to these instincts, your animal brain could easily convince the human brain to drink.

Committed to practicing permanent abstinence from alcohol. You do not need alcohol to survive. Make a program to stop it altogether. When you're ready, say the words "I'll never drink again". Pay attention to your feelings. If you are frightened, panicked, angry, depressed, or you feel sick in some way, it is your instinct that tries to bring you to drink. In all honesty, you will have bad feelings at first. Your body has been accustomed to a large dose of alcohol for the whole time of your addiction. He believes he needs it. It will take time to adapt to a life without alcohol. Give him the time he needs.
Your neurons, which have been dormant for alcohol for some time, will now be stimulated and active again. For this it will be difficult to rest and sleep during the first days of abstinence. Do not give in to the temptations of your animal brain, and spend the night watching TV until you can sleep!

Streamline your animal brain. The human brain is able to control the animal brain, which can not understand that you can live without alcohol. You can learn to consider your animal brain as a separate entity, and understand when he is talking. Convince yourself that he wants to drink, and not you. When you separate your animal brain from the human one, you will understand that it has no power over you. You are in control, and the animal brain is a stranger. All you can do is try to convince yourself to drink, but you can stop it every time.
Your animal brain will try to make you drink by convincing you that you need to do it to survive. If you feel bad, it will tell you to drink to get better. If you feel good, it will tell you to drink to celebrate. He will use every event of your life as an excuse to drink. Learn to recognize the thoughts that drive you to drink and to attribute them to the animal brain.

Answer your animal brain by saying "never" when it asks you to drink. You can control yourself this way. Your instincts will be very strong and you will often be tempted to drink (especially in the beginning), but now that you know what it is, you will know how to react. Remember, every thought or feeling that suggests you drink comes from your animal brain. When you recognize one, remind yourself "I will never drink again" and keep going on with your life. Do not compromise with your instincts, learn to dominate them.
If one of your friends offers you a drink, answer "No thanks, I'm quitting". You can also say "Just drink for tonight" or just "No, thank you" if you do not want to make your intentions known. But if people in your circle tend to drink, it's probably best to be direct with them so they can help you. If they do not, look for new friends.
Over time, it will always be easier to control your instincts. It will not take long to learn to master the urge to drink, more easily being able to stay sober.

Alcoholics Anonymous Step 5

5     Enjoy your recovery from alcohol addiction. When you decide to stop drinking forever, one of the first difficulties you will encounter will be to face the reality without alcohol. You will be sitting in the house with nothing to do, with your instincts that will torment you by asking you to drink and it will be very difficult to resist without distractions. For this you will have to find some activities to keep you busy. Find (or rediscover) a hobby that takes up your time. Join a gym, repair a classic car, or find a girl. Learn to cook, play an instrument, paint, or go out with your (sober) friends. Write articles on wikiHow. Put aside the money you would have spent on drinking and watch your piggy bank fill up. Celebrate every anniversary of your sobriety, whether it's a week or a decade: things will get better and better today.

Do not be afraid of giving in or relapse: fear is another instinct that comes from your animal brain trying to find an excuse to make you drink.

In the end, the CORE program will become automatic, and you will not have to make a big effort to stay sober. There may be times when you will feel sad, angry or depressed, but it happens to everyone. If you have the instinct to drink in response to these feelings, you will know how to react. Your life will improve a lot if you get rid of alcohol.     advertisement ConsigliModifica

The CORE program can also be used to overcome other dependencies. These techniques can be used to quit smoking, to overcome addiction to drugs, drugs or other substances. When it comes to quitting, all addictions are similar. Simply substitute the word alcohol in this text with the object of your addiction to turn it into a universal guide. Addiction is a strong adversary, but thanks to the help of this program it is possible to overcome it.

Technically, the "human brain" is called "neocortex", and the "animal brain" is called "midbrain." The neocortex is the complex and conscious section of the brain, it is the part that attributes the sense of individuality and being yourself. The midbrain, on the other hand, is a non-conscious section of the brain that regulates all survival functions, such as breathing, feeding, sex, etc. When you have an addiction, the object of your addiction becomes part of the Survival instincts of your midbrain can push you to use this substance only if you make an informed decision to drink. This decision is taken by the neocortex. You can learn to control the midbrain through the use of the neocortex. AvvertenzeModifica     If you have a serious alcohol problem and suddenly stop drinking without medical or social help, but you will have a relapse, you can indulge in alcohol even more than I did before. It is a reaction of the midbrain that tries to recover all the "lost" alcohol. Do not do it for any reason. Remember that alcoholism can lead to intoxication, liver disease and death.

If you have a serious alcohol problem, you may need to be admitted to a detox clinic to avoid medical problems. But if you know that anonymous alcoholics are not for you, do not agree to enter an "addiction treatment" program when the physical symptoms are overcome. Almost all these programs are based on the twelve steps of anonymous alcoholics. Things you will need Edit

Distractions. Distracting and finding a pastime is an absolute priority.

Reminders. In some cases your midbrain will try to make you fall in the use of alcohol by recalling happy memories of your alcoholic period. You will have to counter this possibility by making a list of the reasons that led you to stop drinking. Do not forget all the negative elements that alcoholism has brought into your life, such as guilt, embarrassment, social isolation, legal and financial problems, failure of relationships and health problems.
